Federal Government Shutdown Resources for Members

Key Issues Most Likely to Affect DPMs

Dear Members,

As of 12:01 a.m. on October 1, 2025, the U.S. federal government has shut down after Congress was unable to reach a funding agreement before the end of the fiscal year. During a shutdown, non-essential federal employees are furloughed, and many government services are paused until funding is restored.

To ensure you have the information you need, APMA has created a resource page: www.apma.org/Shutdown.

Key issues most likely to affect DPMs include:

  1. Claims Processing: CMS has placed a temporary 10-business-day hold on processing all claims. The impact should be minimal, as CMS normally operates on a 14-day turnaround.
  2. Telehealth Extenders: Telehealth extender waivers are no longer in effect. For DPMs furnishing DME that requires a face-to-face encounter, if the encounter occurred via telehealth, please ensure it complies with the more restrictive telehealth requirements before dispensing the DME.

If you have any questions, please contact Gail Reese, JD, APMA Director of Health Policy & Practice, Phone: 301-581-9230;Email: greese@apma.org.
